Perhaps this sentence is enough to explain the importance of education. An economy like India cannot even think of its growth without understanding and realizing the importance of education. The Government realized also. As per the data there are 42 central universities, 275 state universities, 130 deemed universities and almost 90 private universities. It seems that India seems to have arrived. With “Sarva Siksha Abhiyan” and RTE (Right to education) and making mandatory primary education, the county shows a brighter side which would attract anyone.

But scratch the surface a little there is a lot more hidden. Why are the Indian students complaining so much? Is this only because of the faulty reservation system? Is this because privatization of education and mushrooming of number of colleges fail to provide quality? Every year a state University (formerly called UPTU) gives more than 200000 degrees of MBA and an equivalent number of engineers.

Consider the quality of engineer who measures the speed of light in Volts? Yes this is the truth!

A survey was conducted and it revealed shocking findings. In the center most state of India Madhya Pradesh, not any of the headmasters in the schools surveyed had the minimum prescribed qualification. In Andhra Pradesh, a school was managed by a mechanic and his wife. The survey also broke the allegory that education was free of charge in government schools – in the northern States, the learning pointed out, the annual expenditure in sending a child to a government school was Rs.366; in Maharashtra it was Rs.385; in Rajasthan Rs.810; and in Karnataka Rs1, 200.
The most important reasons alluded for the poor state of government schools is lack of funds. The government total expenditure for generating satisfactory infrastructure in schools continue to remain dolefully inadequate – at 3 per cent of GDP, a far cry from the 6 per cent as recommended by the Kothari Commission as early as 1964.

Some critical facts about Indian education sector:

The fundamental infrastructure is missing: 24% schools do not have a building in India
About 60% of children between age group of 7-12 fail to read a simple Para
48% student drop out before completing their elementary education
The private sector market size ( class I to XII) around 22k-26k crores

Private tuition and coaching have done the remaining. Number of complaints against coaching could be seen who took money in advance and did not give the desired output. Parents have filled the consumer forums complaining about tyrant fee structure.

This is the right time that some concrete steps must be taken for change in the educator sector!

It is summertime and most children who attend public and private schools are outside enjoying their summer vacation. Children who are home schooled may find that learning does not stop for them all because the weather becomes warmer. As a parent it can be difficult to teach children who wish they were outside enjoying all the delights that summer has to offer with other neighborhood children. You can get around the summertime blues by bringing summer enjoyment to the homeschooling experience.

One of the best ways to keep homeschooled children engaged during the summer months is to take learning outside. If it is possible change the learning environment for the summer to the outdoors. Of course, weather permitting, allowing children to complete their studies in the warmth of the sun and surrounded by nature could help to alleviate the restless feeling children may develop.

Reserve a particular spot such as a place in the backyard or a spot under a large tree to sit and complete studies. You can even set up your own makeshift outside classroom using picnic tables as a communal desk and a portable chalkboard or an easel to write on. Being outside will allow the children to still be able to meet their educational obligation while enjoying the summertime weather.

Another way to provide stimulation to children while homeschooling during the summer is to incorporate summer activities into the learning process. There are many summer time and outside activities that can be made into educational experiences. For example, making homemade ice cream is a wonderful summertime science activity. By using basic ingredients such as sugar, salt, vanilla extract and water from your kitchen and rock salt and ice you can create an experiment that is educational and a delicious summer treat! This experiment will teach children about chemical interactions and the results they produce.

For reading you could start a summer reading club where all the children can sit outside on the lawn and read and discuss interesting parts of a book they enjoy. There are many different types of activities that can be molded to suit children for summer learning.

Finally, go on field trips. Field trips are an excellent way to make summer homeschooling fun and entertaining! There are lots of places you can go to teach your children about a variety of topics. If you want to learn more about history or art visit a local museum or art gallery. Are you studying different animals? Well a trip to the zoo is an excellent outing to learn more about the animal kingdom and its entire species. Even a trip to the beach can be educational. You can pick up seashells and categorize them. Field trips are a great way to learn but at the same time get out of the house and make learning fun.

Being creative can make learning at home even during the summer an interesting and exciting experience.

In the midst of multiple international conflicts, an interwoven global economy and the shrinking nature of our techno-driven world, language learning can no longer be considered an elective subject, but should rather be a necessary core to modern education. Typically, we put language learning on hold through much of elementary school, but this is the time when children’s minds are most adept for absorbing words and languages.

Schools throughout the country are realizing this need and implementing Dual Language Education.

From neighborhood schools to charters and magnets, these schools are providing their students with greater opportunity to academically compete with students abroad by diversifying their skill sets in areas of communication, problem-solving, critical thinking, and analysis. Some education leaders are even predicting that dual language education will be the future of American schools.

Dual Language Education vs. ESL/ESOL

Dual Language Education is often confused with ESL/ESOL programs. While there are similarities between the two, there are major differences in their agendas.

The Breakdown: Compare & Contrast

Dual Language Education
- Schoolwide approach
- Goal: To provide ALL students with the skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening) necessary to become fluent in both languages
- Programs usually begin at a young age (kindergarten or 1st grade) and continue for at least five years
- Students automatically opt in by enrolling in the school
- Depending on the type of program, requirements are placed on instructional time in partner language
- Not available in every school

ESL/ESOL
- Select group of students
- Goal: To provide non-native English-speaking students with the proper skills (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) necessary for academic success
- Program entrance is on an individual basis and can begin at any grade for any length of period
- Students may opt in or may be chosen based on entrance exams/placement tests
- Program is supplemental to classroom curriculum
- Most public schools have ESL/ESOL

Variation in Dual Language Education
Within the last few years, there has been a steady increase in the number of dual language programs throughout the United States.

Results vary depending on the type of program and structure implemented however overall results remain positive. Parents and educators have taken great interest in such programs because they feel they will provide students with multilevel thinking strategies, stronger linguistic skills, and greater communication skills to succeed in the interdependent world.

Dual language programs can be classified into four categories:

1. Two-way Immersion- This type of program requires an enrollment of both native English-speaking students and native speaking students of the partner language. Schools may choose to implement programs that are either full-immersion (50-50 model) or partial-immersion (90-10 model). Both immersion programs have been proven to have high success rates.

2. Heritage Language Programs- Participants of this language program are dominant in the English language but have parents, grandparents or other ancestors fluent in the partner language. This program addresses the needs of heritage language learners.

3. Foreign Language Immersion- Also known as one-way immersion, foreign language immersion involves students that are native English speakers in hopes to become fluent in the partner language. It is more in-depth than spending a portion of your day in Spanish class or French class.

4. Developmental Bilingual Programs- Enrollment in this type of program is specific to those who are native speakers of the partner language. Participants of this program will develop the necessary skills and strategies to not only succeed academically, but also be fully proficient and comfortable in both languages.

Currently, the vast majority of dual language programs in the U.S. are in English and Spanish however other languages with growing popularity include: Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean.

These variances in languages are a determined by a combination of factors including, but not limited to, school district demographics, community needs, and educator or student interest. Dual language programs are most commonly used in states such as Texas, New Mexico, California, and Hawaii however schools nationwide are looking into implementing this type of curriculum.

Success of Dual Language Education
Singapore’s current national bilingual education policy is an excellent example of how successful these programs can be.

By government order, students in the Singaporean education system are required to learn two languages, English and one of the other three official main languages of the country (Mandarin, Malay or Tamil). This has allowed nearly the entire literate population of Singapore to be fully bilingual all while unifying all members of its nation without sacrifice to any heritage.

How it is developed: The English language is today the most widely spoken of any language in the world. It is not only the native language of Britain and many other countries but it is also being learn by people of nations everywhere as the foreign language most useful to know.

How did it come to be the English language?

The English language was introduced into Britain by the Anglo- Saxons when they invaded the island in the 5th, 6th and 7th centuries from Europe. It was different from modern English as we know it, as all languages change through the centuries, but the words these people brought over become the basis of English. New words have been added even since then, as new ideas, institutions and inventions were adopted and the words for them needed.

When St. Augustine brought Christianity to England in the 6th century, he brought too, a set of Latin, and Greek words connected with region – words such as altar, nun and creed.

The Norsemen from Scandinavia who invaded England in the 9th and 10th centuries spoke a branch of the Germanic language related to the language of the original Anglo-Saxon settlers; it is probable that the two people could understand each other, and the Norsemen introduced many new worlds into language. Some of these took the place of older English words of the same meaning: sky, leg, knife, egg and follow are example of words introduced at this time. When the Normans came from France in the year 1066, they introduced a host of French words dealing with law and government, the church , hunting and chivalry – words such as attorney, assize, saint and feudal. When Caxton first began to print in the English language, he choose books such as Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales written in the dialect of the southeast of England and this had enormous influence on the language spoken in other parts of the country.

When the revival of learning influenced England in the 16th century, more Latin words poured in_ words such as operate and horticulture.

And as Englishmen began to sail round the world to found colonies in distant lands and came into touch with distant people, so they brought back words from everywhere.

When new sciences came into being during the last century, many new words needed to be invented to describe the new ideas, such as telegram and psychology. Today the English of the old world is much influenced by the English of the new world and the U.S.A has sent across the Atlantic in its films and plays many new words to describe the things and situations that began over.

Treatment plans for ADHD that include stimulants work well, according to research.

What has been observed is stimulant medication can show improvement in the area of following rules. The over activity of emotions improves, as well, with the use of stimulants. Relationships with friends, other peers, and family members can show improvement when a child responds positively to this kind of treatment.

Most children do respond positively to medical treatment for ADHD, however. Studies show that about 80% of children on a medication treatment for ADHD, have responded well to the treatment.
Parents who can afford home tuition should know that tuition can provide great help to students who have the potential to score excellent results. This could mean that many parents consider hiring tutors for their children.

But before hiring a tutor from a tuition agency, one should always look out for these points:

Educational Qualifications

It is very important that one should always look through the educational background of the tutor before hiring one. The tutor’s educational qualifications say a lot about the tutor. Tutors who have gone through examinations and studied particular subjects similar to the student’s and have produced great results, may share many valuable tips with him or her and understands what he is teaching them.

Interest

Other than getting a tutor with excellent educational background and who has had many experiences, a tutor with great passion in teaching and taking their time to give tuition is very important.

With passion, it shows that the tutor has great interest in giving tuition and it would affect the way he teaches.

Experiences

Besides just getting a tutor with excellent educational qualifications, one must bear in mind that the way the tutor teaches is also very important. It has to be effective so as to ensure that the students understand what their tutor has taught them.

So a good home tutor is the one that has the ability to make your child understand and pick up the subject he/she has problem with; the one that is able to discover your child’s lacks on a certain subject; the one that can stimulate the child’s mind and commitment; the one that has the ability to motivate your child to work hard; and, above all, the one that can set himself/herself as an example of morality and responsibility.Encourage your child to speak up and express all his/hers likes and dislikes towards the home tutor. In the end, the compatibility between the home tutor and your child will bring the best results.

The best way to choose a good home tutor is to do a bit of research and to get involved in the selection process. And don’t be afraid to refuse or fire any home tutor that doesn’t suit your expectations.

Bob Jones homeschooling is a Christian based curriculum designed to promote “critical thinking skills with real life applications.” It is a k-12 school which delivers its courses via: DVD, hard drive, satellite, and online. In addition to the basics, there are many specialized courses offered. This system of education is premised on the belief that it is insufficient for a child to memorize facts and figures. The child must fully understand the subject matter and be able to relate it to life experiences.

The DVDs are leased from Bob Jones University Press and so there is no additional charge if there are multiple students in the household. They can be viewed on computer, television, or a DVD player. Parents are responsible for guiding their children in working through the program. It is not clear from the material provided whether lesson plans and prompts are provided to parents.

The hard drive program is available for kindergarten through eight grade.

Parents lease the hard drive for one class level for one year which plugs into the USB port of their home computer. The program is menu driven which makes navigation quite easy.

The satellite program is no longer available as it has been replaced by the online program which is delivered over the Internet for kindergarten through 12th grade. Courses are taught by certified teachers. A convenient monthly payment plan is offered and discounts are provided for more than one student in a family. This program is only available to those in the USA, Canada, and Puerto Rico.

Online polls indicate high praise for this particular school and thus it bears looking into, especially by those parents looking for an innovative home school which incorporates Christian ideals into its courses and which promises to teach students how to think critically and to interact with the world in which they live and become responsible citizens.

Online education has expanded rapidly within the past few years and, despite predictions that enrollment would “begin to level off,” colleges across the nation have reported all-time enrollment highs in online programs in 2009. In fact, enrollment in online degree programs increased by 21% in last year, alone.

And, the increase isn’t only due to the popularity of the for-profit online sector- non-profit public and private colleges have expanded their online offerings and welcomed a total of 1 million more students into accredited online degree programs. These additional 1 million students enrolled in at least one online course bringing the online education enrollment total to 5.6 million. The increase, though generally unexpected, is a welcome affirmation to proponents of online education programs.

Additionally, 74.9% of public colleges reported in the survey, conducted by the Sloan Consortium and the Babson Survey Research Group, that continuing to expand their online education programs is part of their “long-term plans.” Elaine Allen a co-director of the Babson Survey Research Group speculates on the unexpected and somewhat disproportionate growth of online schools in traditional education sectors. Says Allen, traditional colleges are responding to the rapid growth of for-profit online schools and realizing that “if we want to grow and have profits, we need to be in the online sector.”

The report of all-time high enrollment rates came as a surprise to many considering the fairly negative press many online for-profit schools have been receiving over the past few months. But, says Allen, while for-profit schools may be feeling the pressure from federal officials to curtail unfavorable recruiting practices, bad press is certainly not affecting online education expansion across the larger higher education sector.

As administrators continue to warm to the idea of teaching online and studies continue to show the effectiveness of learning online, online education is expected to continue growing. And, while enrollment figures may level off in the next few years as competition amongst schools rises and more and more new online programs are implemented across the nation, it’s evident that online learning is here to stay.

Starting school this year? If you are entering a college or university, beginning a master’s program, beginning a doctorate program, or simply entering high school, you may have noticed that over the course of the last few years the ‘back to school’ shopping list has greatly changed. Instead of simply going for notebooks and pencils, or even special graphing calculators, now many schools insist that their students have specific software. While the software is already often expensive enough, the problem for many can be that a computer is required to operate it. Today, a desktop computer is not nearly efficient enough for many students who need to constantly carry the machine back and forth from class. This means spending the money for a top notch laptop, the software, and on top of that tuition. Some schools now include the computer with tuition, but not all colleges and universities are able to do that, and neither are all students and their families. The truth, however, is that for many areas of study there simply isn’t a way to gain and learn practical job skills without a computer these days. Learning these software suites and packages is absolutely essential, and at the heart and soul of being able to learn the techniques required for a future career in the area of study. Whether a social science, graphic design, mathematics or any number of sciences the number of areas of study requiring computers is not likely to decrease any time soon. The plus side, however, for college students is that with a laptop they can now improve their efficiency if they have 4G wireless internet.

Now available in many cities of all sizes across the country, including many college towns and communities, 4G wireless internet is an actual mobile network that allows users to access their own private and secure connections no matter where they are. Having a wireless connection at all times means that studying, emailing, social networking, and of course, researching information for class is easy to do while you’re on the campus shuttle, while in your dorm room, in your off campus apartment, or even in the classroom or library. While having coffee and waiting for a study buddy, or while sitting around waiting for a lecture to start you can be fully connected to wireless internet without having even the weakest Wi-Fi connection zone in range.

Today, many people use the internet to study remotely, as it is possible to download syllabuses, stream lessons and lecture recorded on video, access online practice exams, and even upload and send out term papers and other assignments and correspondences in a matter of seconds. While 3G networks allow people to have mobility with their internet today, it’s hard to type an entire paper on the tiny pocket sized devices such networks were designed for. Instead, have full use of your computer and the internet no matter where you go and be the best student you can possibly be this semester, this year, and during your entire degree! All of this has been made possible through WiMax towers, and of course the power of high speed 4G wireless internet.

All around the country, parents are pulling their kids out of school because of the liberal agenda, worldly curriculum, low academic standards, overcrowded classrooms, lack of individualized attention, problems on the playground, harmful peer-pressure, etc.

And private school isn’t necessarily the best solution either. With skyrocketing tuition fees, more over-crowding and the influx of expelled students from the public school system, parents are realizing that private school doesn’t always solve the problems created by public school shortcomings. This leaves homeschooling as the best, and perhaps only, acceptable solution for many families.

Removing your children from the public school system is the easy part. Creating and maintaining a healthy, well-rounded, academically superior and God honoring learning environment at home requires some intentional planning and execution.

It doesn’t happen automatically.

In fact, most homeschooling parents would agree that it often takes two full years to feel as though they have finally entered their stride and are fostering the home learning environment that they are striving for. But what about those first two years? We want them to be great, right? Wouldn’t it be nice if this learning curve could be shortened?

Join our Homeschooling ABCs class and get 26 weeks of step-by-step instruction – all the basics of homeschooling from A to Z – delivered straight to your email box!

That is exactly what this Homeschooling ABCs class is about – step-by-step information delivered to you once a week via email that will include bite-sized chunks of wisdom and advice as well as action steps for that week.

The following lessons will build upon that knowledge, but will not overwhelm you because you will have had a week to digest the previous week’s lesson and put it into practice.
